(New York, New York) – Today, lawmakers, people who survived solitary confinement, family members, and allies held a rally and daylong exhibit at the Harlem State Office Building to demand an end to solitary confinement in New York City and New York State. As part of a statewide and national bus tour that went from Buffalo to Mt. Kisco to New York City and will reach 18 cities across the country over eight weeks, this immersive art and activism experience provides the public with a window into the horrors of solitary confinement and calls for an end to this torture. Participants called upon New York state and local officials and lawmakers to fully implement the HALT Solitary Law across New York State and Local Law 42 in New York City to end solitary confinement, as well as stop sending people to deadly incarceration, protect our immigrant communities, and create meaningful pathways for release from incarceration.
