Last weekend, nearly 1,000 people packed into the parking lot of a truck stop in Washington County. Many were corrections officers from Great Meadow Correctional Facility, just up in the road in Comstock.

The state plans to close Great Meadow and Sullivan Correctional, a prison in the Hudson Valley, due to widespread staff shortages and declining inmate populations.

State Sen. Dan Stec, a Republican from Queensbury who represents the North Country, spoke at the rally about the working conditions inside prisons and twice referred to incarcerated people as “animals.”
