Complaint Documents Widespread Violations of New York Law and of International Human Rights Law’s Prohibitions on Torture, Cruel and Inhuman Treatment, and Extra-Judicial Killings
(New York) — Yesterday, the HALT Solitary Campaign filed a complaint with the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-judicial Executions regarding abuse, torture, and deaths taking place in New York state prisons and local jails. As the complaint states:
By locking people in solitary confinement, beating people to death, holding people in pre-trial detention for years, locking people in prison for decades, and killing people through excessive periods of incarceration coupled with medical neglect and other abusive conditions, New York State, New York City, and other New York localities are not only violating their own domestic laws, but also violating fundamental international human rights law…
